Alex Kendrick

Writer & Director

In 2002, Alex founded Sherwood Pictures with the blessing of Senior Pastor Michael Catt. He began work on the first movie, FLYWHEEL, with his brother Stephen, also on staff. Alex wrote, directed, produced, and acted in FLYWHEEL—helped by 60 church volunteers. After the overwhelming response to the film in 2003, he again partnered with his brother to write and produce FACING THE GIANTS. Again, he acted in and directed the film, which was picked up and distributed by Provident Films, a branch of Sony Pictures. FACING THE GIANTS showed in more than 1,000 theaters after its September 2006 release and grossed $10 million-plus in box office receipts. The DVD was released in 13 languages, in 56 countries, and sold more than 2.5 million copies. More than 12,000 churches have used the movie for ministry outreach. On February 22, 2007, the Georgia State House of Representatives and Senate read a resolution honoring Sherwood Pictures and the Church for the success and positive impact of FACING THE GIANTS. In 2007, Alex and Stephen wrote the screenplay for FIREPROOF, and shot it in Albany with Alex directing and Stephen producing. More than 1,200 Sherwood volunteers helped with the production. The film was released in September 2008 and grossed $33 million-plus, making it the highest-grossing independent film of 2008. FIREPROOF has since sold over 3 million DVDs. The brothers then wrote COURAGEOUS, which Alex directed and acted in. The film released in September 2011 to theaters nationwide. It made $34.5 million in the box office and was released internationally in theaters and on DVD. To date, Alex has received more than 28 awards for his work, including Best Screenplay, Best Production, Best Feature Film, Most Inspiring Movie, Most Inspiring Performance and Best of Festival.
